2011 CUTC Summer Meeting


The following is the detailed agenda for the meeting with links to presentations:

Sunday, June 12th: Optional social activities, including tours, for those arriving early

Here are a few ideas for ways to spend free time in Portland if you arrive a bit early.

  • One of the most popular summer tourist destinations in Portland is the International Rose Test Garden in Washington Park.
  • Watch Dragon Boat races in the Willamette ("will-AM-ette") River on Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. This is an elimination based event so the Sunday after races are the best.
  • View floats from the annual Rose Festival Parade (held on Saturday, 6/11) on Sunday between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. at the riverfront.
  • Look for fellow CUTC colleagues in the bar at Nel Centro during happy hour from 4 to 6 p.m.
  • For dinner, we'll send you some restaurant recommendations along with some sightseeing tips in the mail - look for it during the week of June 6th.

8:45 a.m. Panel discussion on Assessment and Impact of New UTC Program

  • A panel of UTC Directors will provide reactions to the proposed Program

11:00 a.m. UTC Information Sharing, and Partnership Development by USDOT Priority Areas

  • CUTC members will have the opportunity to learn more about their partners (and competition) through break-out groups. Areas will be set-up by USDOT Priority Areas and allow for round-table discussion on what your Center has to offer others.

12:15 p.m. Lunch

1:30 p.m. The Oregon Model: Integration of Transportation and Land Use for Livable Communities. Oregon has a rich history of considering land use in transportation decisions and vice versa. The panelists will set the stage for discussion by providing the history of transportation and land use in Oregon, sharing the results of land use decisions on transportation and communities, planning for future growth, and sharing similarities of Oregon to other communities. Moderator: Rex Burkholder (Metro Councilor)

Panel:

2:30 p.m. The role of research and the UTC. Research is an integral part of the Oregon model from helping to inform policy decisions to using data and information to better understand the role and impacts of certain decisions. Panelists will discuss how their research has helped to shape and inform transportation and livable communities. Moderator: Jennifer Dill, OTREC

3:00 p.m. Transferability of the Oregon Model. Though Oregon may seem unique, many regions are creating livable communities. The panelists will discuss now the components of the Oregon model are being applied in other communities nationally, and the shift towards adopting a multimodal view of transportation. Moderator: Rich Margerum, University of Oregon- Regional transportation and land use decision making: a multistate analysis

There are four planned tours (optional) that will begin between 5 and 5:30. See below for details.

Tuesday Evening Tours. Early registrants have had a lot of questions about the Tuesday evening tour options. Here are some details/explanations:

  • 4T Trail (Train, Trail, Tram and Trolley): This is a really unique way to get to know Portland: we will ride the light rail up to the Zoo, hike for four miles (unpaved, 500' net elevation gain), ride down to the river on the aerial tram, and then return on the streetcar (aka, "trolley"). There are several dinner options close to the streetcar route. This is a physically rigorous outing; the hike is moderate and sneakers and comfortable clothing is recommended. Free!
  • Bike Tour: Portland is reknowned for its bicycle infrastructure, culture and economy. This guided tour will introduce you to how we've earned this reputation, from bike signals, bike boulevards and bike corrals. The pace will be light and the route overwhelmingly flat. A small fee covers the rental of a bike and helmet.
  • Food and beer tour: Aside from bikes, Portland is also well known for excellent food and beer. This guided tour will lead you past (and sometimes into) some of our favorite watering holes and places to eat between the university district at the south end of downtown and the trendy pearl district at the north end (a distance of less than 3 miles. We will travel on foot and on the light rail or streetcar (free) to cover this distance. If you want to experience some local flavor, this is a great way to do it!
  • Architecture Walking Tour: If you love to explore a city by staring up at the buildings then this tour is for you. Enjoy a guided walking tour of some of Portland's interesting downtown sites, including numerous parks and fountains as well as notable structures, both historic and modern. Among other things, you'll meet Portlandia, the second largest Copper Repousse statue in the US (after the Statue of Liberty)!

 

Wednesday, June 15th: UTC Administrative Managers Meeting or National Workforce Summit Planning Meeting

Half-day to discuss the nuts and bolts of running a UTC (example topics in the past include: UTC Grant Budgeting and Planning for Next Authorization: Managing funds and maintaining the program without an authorized bill, keeping the Research In Progress (RiP) database up to date; communicating the UTC Message)from 8am to 1pm with breakfast, lunch and a snack provided.
