NITC program accepting proposals for third funding cycle
The National Institute for Transportation and Communities, or NITC, program invites proposals for a third round of research, education, and technology transfer projects. The NITC program supports innovations in: livability, incorporating safety and environmental sustainability. This grant is part of the University Transportation Center program, funded by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Research and Innovative Technology Administration, and is a partnership between Portland State University and the University of Oregon, Oregon Institute of Technology and the University of Utah.
The NITC program will award at least $750,000 in this funding round to research, education and technology transfer projects that support NITC’s theme. Projects should range from $30,000 to $150,000. Projects can focus on research, education, or technology transfer. All projects submitted for this request for proposals (RFP) will undergo peer review. All awards require one-to-one non-federal match in the form of cash or in-kind services from project partners—to include universities, transportation and other public agencies, industry, and nonprofit organizations. Please refer to Section 3 of the linked document below for specific details. Projects awarded under this RFP may start as soon as August 1, 2014 and must be completed by December 31, 2015, including the final report.

Pooled-Fund RFP to Develop an Online Non-Motorized Traffic Count Data Archive
The National Institute for Transportation and Communities (NITC) is pleased to issue its first pooled-fund request for proposal to develop an online non-motorized traffic data archive. Making non-motorized count data accessible online with visualization tools that are useful to both researchers and practitioners can address two needs: first, to improve the practice of planning and designing for non-motorized transportation activity; and, second, to expand the ability of transportation professionals to share rigorous and quantitative metrics associated with bicycling and walking.
The project budget is $175,000 with research completed within a time period of 19 months. Interested teams do not need to provide match. Proposers interested in submitting proposals must email Hau Hagedorn ([email protected]) with their intent to submit a proposal by December 16, 2013. The email should include name(s) and contact information of investigators including university affiliation. Full proposals are due January 31, 2014. For more information, go to: http://theotrec.org/for_researchers/rfp
ELIGIBILITY
Faculty members and research faculty eligible to serve as Principal Investigators (PIs) at Portland State University, the University of Oregon, the Oregon Institute of Technology, or the University of Utah may submit proposals.

2013-2014 NITC Call for Proposals
The National Institute for Transportation and Communities (NITC) invites proposals for research, education, and technology transfer transportation projects that support innovations in: livability, incorporating safety and environmental sustainability
Please read the RFP carefully as it contains three different grant opportunities:
- General RFP. Up to $1,000,000 will be awarded to research, education and technology transfer projects that support NITC’s theme. Another General RFP will be released early 2014.
- Small starts. Up to $60,000 will be awarded to small research development endeavors.
- Pooled-fund. Up to $180,000 will be awarded to projects specifically responding to local agency pooled-fund research statements. A separate RFP will be released this Fall.
Successful research proposals will combine advanced research with applied projects that fit the NITC theme, linking to articulated USDOT priorities specifically livability, environmental sustainability and safety. Successful education proposals will enhance, develop, or promote undergraduate or graduate transportation education, with sustained outcomes or support continued education for practitioners. Technology transfer proposals should support the application of transportation research to practice, including dissemination of research results, continuing education, and training. OTREC Small Starts RFP
OTREC announces the opportunity to apply for awards to support small faculty development research endeavors with priority given to untenured, tenure-track faculty and faculty who have not received an OTREC grant in the past. The purpose of these awards is to assist researchers interested in transportation but have not had an opportunity to undertake a small project that supports innovations in sustainable transportation through advanced technology, integration of land use and transportation, and healthy communities. A total of $60,000 is available to be awarded; with no individual award larger than $10,000. All grants require 1:1 match. Proposals are due January 31, 2013. Complete details for the Small Starts grants can be found in RFP and Budget Form. Contact Hau Hagedorn ([email protected]) with questions.
Eligibility: Faculty members and research faculty eligible to serve as Principal Investigators (PIs) at Portland State University, Oregon State University, the University of Oregon, or the Oregon Institute of Technology may submit proposals and serve as PIs with OTREC.
Priority will be given to:
- Applications from untenured, tenure-track faculty.
- Applications from faculty who have not previously received an OTREC grant.
- Applications from research projects that are interdisciplinary.
Electric Vehicles Research Matching Funds: There is a great opportunity for faculty interested in electric vehicles to receive matching funds for OTREC Small Starts grants through Drive Oregon. Drive Oregon is a nonprofit organization with diverse membership from across the range of Oregon companies and organizations involved in electrifying the transportation system (www.driveoregon.org). Research opportunities range from product development, vehicle adoption, economic analysis and business development. Please contact John MacArthur ([email protected]) and he help you coordinate with Drive Oregon and potential industry partners.
